DIY tulle skirt (tutorial)

My sister inspired me to start sewing so I purchased a sewing machine a week ago. Since then, I've been jumping head first into sewing projects. Nevermind learning to sew straight, I'm starting with dresses.

After two dresses, one successful and one failure, I dived straight into sewing a tulle skirt. I found lots of directions on Pinterest and had a rough time deciphering them. In the end, I just winged it like I did with my other sewing projects.

Here's the skirt. My sister made that blouse—it's purdy. Please excuse my bad photos—it's hard doing selfies.

I forgot to put in that you need to cut another layer of lining, same measurements as the tulle, but a few inches shorter and sew it under all the tulle layers.

    1. Hi Sarah! I used a stretchy jersey knit fabric for the lining. You can also use non-stretchy fabric like satin although that might be pricier.

  4. You don't usually hem tulle. I've only had to hem tulle once and it was the petticoat on a formal dress.

  6. Wonderful skirt! Approximately how many yards of tulle did you use?

    1. Hi Callie! I used about 10.5 yards for 7 layers with my measurements. You can use less tulle if you want less poof and more if you want more poof.

  9. It appears in the photo as uneven. Is it just the way the picture looks or does it come out sort of in an uneven design?

    1. It looks uneven because I'm arching my back so the front looks a lot higher than the back. I also meant for the edges to be uneven because I like the way it looked. But if you cut and sew in perfect circles then they shouldn't be uneven.

  12. Instead of a layer underneath would a skin tight short skirt work? Could you also use this as the elastic for the top? Essentially sewing a tulle skirt to an already existing skirt?

    1. Both ideas will work. I just had a lining sewn in so I don't have to go find shorts to wear under. My closet is pretty unorganized haha. And sewing the tulle into an existing skirt works as well!

  13. I am super new to working with tulle and I just found out there is nylon tulle and polyester tulle. Does it matter which one I use for this skirt?

    1. You can use either one. Nylon tends to be softer and stronger than polyester so it's a matter of which you prefer and how it feels in your hands.

  16. Hi! You look fabulous! How many yards of tulle did you use?

  17. Hi! i was wondering what you think about A zipper for the back? do you think it would hold up longer than the elastic?

  18. I'm confused about using the hip measurement, not a waist measurement, in cutting out the fabric. I'm making this skirt for a friend and do NOT want to mess it up! We don't have unlimited funds to go buy more fabric. Thank you so much for your post! You look DARLING!
